Topic:

The Intertidal Zone

The intertidal zone starts at the lowest level expose to air by tides or waves to the highest level washed by tide or waves according to Introduction to Marine Science 2nd Edition.

Summary:

The intertidal zone include many different habitats that can represent different zones, such as low, middle, and high and are found at sandy beaches, mudflats, or wetlands. The low zone is exposed during low tide and that is when you can see that it is teeming with life and vegetation (seaweed). Vegetation is able to grow at large height because of the ecosystem. Also the sea life in that zone tend thrive because the abundance of food due photosynthesis. It should be noted that it can also be difficult for fish because of the change in environment associated with the tides receding leaving fish immobile for hours at a time and therefore vulnerable to predators. However, many of the animal have adapted to these harsh environment.

The middle zone is usually submerged most of the time except during low tide. This zone is the most active of the intertidal zones and is teeming with life.

The high intertidal zone is a harsh environment plants and animals because of the sun and rough waves that may leave this environment without water for an extended period of time.
